Water Extraction in Clay: Sump Pumps, Tanks and Washer Hoses
Clay has little flood history, so a wet basement here is usually something inside that failed.
Water Extraction quote in Clay
Tell us where the water came from, what got wet and whether it has stopped. A person reads every request and matches it to a licensed, insured water damage contractor. If water is still coming in, close the main shutoff before anything else.

Fast discovery keeps the window open
Clay has the lowest vacancy in the metro, 2.1 percent, across the most homes of any town in the county, so leaks are usually found within hours. That keeps the EPA's 24 to 48 hour window open for the extraction. The one thing to check first is what failed: a sump overflow sits under the standard form's water exclusion unless a backup endorsement was added, while a burst supply line is read as an accidental discharge.
Photographs before the pump
Every wet room from the doorway, the water line and the source, before anything is lifted. The insurer has the right to see the damage as it was.
Ask what the first visit covers
Extraction, lifting carpet, moving contents and setting up drying are the first day. The rebuild is not, and should be quoted separately later.
Keep the invoice separate
An invoice that lists extraction and drying apart from any plumbing repair or rebuild is easier to settle than one blended bill.
Clay's shoreline and flood record
The Town of Clay has roughly 26 miles of shoreline including 17.8 miles of the Oneida River and 5.7 miles of the Seneca River, yet its own planning team recorded that the town does not have unique vulnerabilities to flooding, and it has no repetitive loss properties. Clay borders the Oneida River, not Oneida Lake.

ACS 2020 to 2024 estimates give the Town of Clay 26,282 housing units, the most of any town in Onondaga County, with a vacancy rate of 2.1 percent, the lowest in this metro, and a median year built of 1978. Some 24.6 percent of occupied units heat with electricity and 68.6 percent with utility gas.

The Water exclusion in the ISO HO 00 03 05 11 form removes coverage for water which backs up through sewers or drains, or which overflows or is otherwise discharged from a sump, sump pump or related equipment, and for flood and surface water. The 2011 wording adds that the exclusion applies regardless of whether the water is caused by an act of nature or is otherwise caused. For the plumbing and freezing provisions the form also states that a plumbing system does not include a sump, sump pump or related equipment.

What water extraction involves in Clay
What usually floods a Clay basement
The Town of Clay has about 26 miles of river shoreline on the Oneida and Seneca, yet its own planning team recorded no unique vulnerability to flooding and it has no repetitive loss properties. So when a Clay basement takes water, the cause is usually inside: a sump that could not keep up, a water heater tank, a washer hose or a supply line. Extraction is usually clean water from a known source, which is the most favorable case for drying in place. Photograph the failed equipment and keep any failed part.

Photograph it before anything moves, then send the details. The drying clock started when the water did.
Clay questions about sump and appliance leaks
My Clay sump pump failed and the basement flooded. What should I record?
The sump and pump as they are, the water level, and whether the power was out. Keep the pump if it is replaced. The standard HO-3 form excludes water that overflows from a sump unless a backup endorsement was added, so check your declarations page.
Can extraction start before my insurer has seen the damage?
Yes, once it has been photographed. New York's regulator asks policyholders to protect the property from further damage and says that cost is generally reimbursed with receipts. It is the permanent repair that waits for the inspection, not the pumping.
